Job Searching

There are so many areas to get involved in that provide a connection with the natural world. So, it can easily become overwhelming when looking to start a career in the conservation world.

But, while seeking a role can be complex, we can also see this diverse sector as a pool of opportunities to dive into.

Where to look

Firstly, let’s explore these opportunities. Often, environmental jobs are not advertised on the common, generic job sites like indeed.com, but require you to search on specialist sites, or directly on the organisation’s website.

Here are some examples of job sites for all nature-based roles:

What am I qualified for?

Now you have had a look at what opportunities are available, it’s time to look over the personal specifications for any roles that you take an interest in. The personal specification will outline the requirements you need to have to fulfil the job role. You’ll need to be able to outline how you meet these specifications within the application process.

A good place to start is by evaluating the skills you currently have and thinking about how these could provide value to conservation. Don’t undervalue your personal skills. That part-time role you had when you were 16 serving customers? That gave you active listening, problem-solving, and communication skills. All of which are transferable to use in your future positions.

Do you fit the personal specification? Great! It's time to apply. No? Do you have some skills missing? It’s time to volunteer!
